Charles and Esther Maidment and their eight children made the long journey to the 3 year old colony of South Australia from England as free settlers aboard the "Charles Kerr" arriving on the 17th of June 1840. At the time they arrived to the fledgling Port Adelaide the total state only had a population of 15,000 not counting aborigines and these were spread out across several settlements such as Kangaroo Island and what is now Port Adelaide.
